Comments: Couldn't find myself in the old guestbook, so I'll sign in here. Can't find a lot of Marines from my tour but I hope they are still kickkin' out there.I remember a lot of times in Olongapo, Manila etc. Walked a lot of hours in NAV MAG and AUW. My son , now in the Navy recently spent a few nights in the old Officer Quarters, (now a hotel as is the Seperate Guard Barracks). Guess the place is pretty run down nowadays but memories of those 18 months are crystal clear and fondly remembered . Anyone from my dates is invited to E-Mail etc. , afterall, we ain't gonna last forever are we? Well, I intend to --Ha,Ha !!

Comments: To all of my "old" Marine buddies:
I am not "lost" as I've been carried on the roster of Subic Bay Marines!
I took a discharge after completing a tour @ MCRD San Diego as a Drill Instructor to become a U. S. Border Patrol Agent, which I did for a few years. Got tired of chasing "illegal aliens" around the southwestern U. S. and
decided to come in out of the cold!
Completed the remainder of my time for the Corps (121/2) and retired on
31 October 1992.
Bumped into then-LtCol Szymanski (1stLt in 1972!) @ Camp Lejuene about
1988; what a surprise! Served on "the field" with Arnold Powers.
Wonder if old Gunny Trahern is still around? Capt Lowder? How 'bout SgtMaj Kaiona?
May God make His face to smile upon all my pals and grant you His joy and peace!
Contact me!

Comments: Remember Subic as if it was yesterday. Send love and remebering goodtimes, to the Bill Roy family, Bill Walsh, and Michael Beckam, hope everyone is well. Give me an e- or call if you can, I would like to hear from you. Semper Fi. All the good times we had...Remember the Sampagita and Grande Isalnd!! I am always reminded how fortunate I was to have served as a Marine at Subic Bay. The country, the people, Manila..the history I visited while on two week leave. I remember Gate duty at Kalayahan, Kalakalan and the main gates. Roving patrols and duty driver and those box lunches. I always enjoyed the Kalakalan 4-8 pm shift when the bus to the Mariott would come through and I could order some pancit. Man I love pancit. Use to get around on a Yamaha 175 enduro (with an expansion chamber). Yo Bill Roy..remember the night we all started the Flaming Hooker club..right after we got our house in town, with all the seashell lights and the bamboo bar with the black lights and phosphorescent posters..that was some pad. I remeber the ice cold san miguel.. and the martini glasses full of ron rico 151. we were all telling jokes snot slinging...and laughing. Bill Roy lit Bill Walshs drink on fire and we watched as he tried to get it down...but..instead..he sipped and all I remember is the fire going over his mouth shaped like a whistle...as the pain of the fire soaked through the drinking, he spilled his Flaming Hooker down his front and he was on fire... we were all laughing our drunk _ _ _ es off, as he tilted back in his bar chair and hit the wall..bounced and landed on the floor..it all happened so fast and then we were putting his face out!! I never laughed so hard in my life..Every time I tell that story, I just bust out laughing...you two were a pair! Hope you are still around.

We lost contact after I was shipped to Okinawa to finish my tour.
I remember a few names Wayne Bost the boxer who never won always in trouble with the C O Lessard, Cpl Morris, Hands Watkins,Rio,Reese,
Guarding Bob Hope on one of his tours with the show on the I believe it was the KittyHawk. Spending New Years at the Tiger Bar in Manila.
I have a few photos left there were 7 of us that had hand painted Albums made, various items painted on the cover depicting the PI, mine was stolen in Okinawa while Iwas on emergancy leave. There were photos of Green Beach , and other ereas.
PI was the best, not only the guys I served with, the PI people I spent time time with especially Amy Tan wherever they all have gone with their lives that time in PI will always be a footnote in our personal history. To all who spent thier time in PI Semper Fi and never forget

Comments: I was assigned to "B" company HQ Platoon OOH, rah!!!. I work down in the Nav Mag at the mess hall. It was the best time of my life. I would really like to get in touch with some of the other Marines that were in my Platoon and company. What a good time we all had. You never know how small this world is until you come back to the states and meet up with not only another Marine you were stationed with, but also one of the girls from out in town. That was kind of wired since I was with my wife and kids and my Mother. I had some explaining to do. Semper Fi !

Comments: Stationed with Marine Wing Liason, Cubi Point. I lived in the barracks directly across from B. Co., I remember one of the Marine's catch phrase was "Hello World!" Partying with alot of B Co. at Rolling Stones and sharing in the misery known as Mt. Pinatubo. I remember standing on the 3rd Floor balcony watching B Co. Marines getting bent by some hardass NCO(s). Some great memories not to be forgotten.

Comments: Company B was a lot of fun. Still remember Lefleur, Potter, Cornell, Sarnes, the softball team, GySgt Johson, all the NJPs, 1stSgt Chance (called him no-Chance because everyone got the max), and many others..... How about the time 2nd plt discontinued swapping with 1st plt for MAG duty in the jungle? Both plts went port/starboard and took over their own Guard Shack (East or West). As a result, some 2nd plt Marines didn't go the jungle that week and some 1st plt Marines remained in the jungle an extra week. Some returned to their girlfriends and found that they had other Marine boyfriends also shacking and paying but were in other plts. Now, they were both at the same house at the same time because they were out of the jungle the same time...... too funny.

Subic Bay was an exceptional Duty Station. The 4 years I spent as the Ammunition Technician in S4 to this day stands out. I will never forget the exceptional Marines I served with.

Comments: Great website. Although I was assigned to HqCo, I spent my tour at the Marine Liaison, USAF Hosp, Clark AFB. When I arrived, "Top" Tourpey, GySgt Wire (KIA), Cpl Curry were there. Later GySgt Tom Kessler, Cpl Townsend, Sgt Fransic Mann, Sgt Benjamin, Sgt Hardaman, SSgt Harsh, LCpl Conners, Cpl Weathers, Sgt Allan Schneider, LCpl Fortin all did some "time" at the hosp. Without a doubt the best job I ever had.
I went back in 1977-79 as a Navy anesthestist at the NavHospSubic. A great tour, and I am forever thankful to the Subic Marines for always showing up at the hosp when we needed blood! I remember the bank robbery (Prudential Bank) and how it paralyzed Olongapo! A couple of the docs and me worked on the robber for awhile, but he didn't have much left of his skull!
Keep up the great work, and I'm glad to see that nearly everyone had a great time in PI. Semper Fi.

I enjoyed myself and matured while at Subic-Bay. I have had problems with PTSD regarding the duty in the magazine. I have been in touch with enlisted and officers regarding shootings and fire fiights on and off the base. It has been over thirty years. I think most of the classified information has been declassied. I would like to hear from anyone who had problems. I think evry marine that was assigned to Subic -Bay is hero.
Respectfully,
Daniel R. Devine

Comments: Just returned from the P.I. I hired a driver and car from Manila and visited Subic Bay. It is now a duty free tourist zone. Trendy restaurants, bars, stores and hotels. The HQ barracks is a hotel of some sort. The Base Brig where I worked is overgrown with weeds and recognizable only by the high fence and barb wire. The base gym and football field are still standing. The dock area now houses the Subic Bay yacht club. An expressway is being built to link Subic with Clark AFB.
Olongapo City is very congested with private cars replacing most of the jeepneys and tricycles. Kong's restaurant on Magsaysay is still there, but nearly all the clubs and bars are long gone. Jollibees, McDonalds, and 7-11s are there now.
One thing hasn't changed. "Shit River" still stinks and is still as dirty.
Kind of sad to see what has happened to the greatest duty assignment and liberty port in the Marine Corps!

Comments: I' m the jarhead who broke my M14 on post O1 flipping it around cost-1 stripe, but I got it back , the I.G Inspection Team even took a picture of my wall locker and the Brass posted a 8x12 in the of it in the quaterdeck, I owe it all to Lex my well paid houseboy. He was 42 years old at the time. I was still counting big numbers when I painted the new 3 story barracks and effected the Bravo Company. I went to Manila alone in 77 for 3 weeks leave, stayed in the Makati neighborhood with a wealthy family, saw the War Memorial and all the crosses, the shrine and horseshoe of walls with all the names. Rizal Park with the golden Globe and Corregidor Island. The Death March and Memorials along the Hwy. were I talked to God,all forever with me. Bagio and the huge lion head carved rock and the stairway up to the shrine at Bagio City where I lit a candle, the food I ate and the villages I went and drank Gin and Roses' Lime with the old men, towels over the shoulder... of course The Bottoms Up go-go girls and the Hookin' an' Jabbin' till closing. When I got to the States I went to 1st Recon 1st MarDiv and I admit I was a better Marine after I was out. But don't mess with USA, God Bless The Corps especially 0300's . That last sentence is hand written in black grease pen on the back of my Step-Van since 9-11. Life has been good to me and if the Corps needed I would be there bringing down fire for effect, requesting splash and pissed-off the whole time. And a big salute to the teachers at George Dewey High School who made sure I recieved my Diploma on 30/Nov/1976 that is a huge personal memory when Major Nunnaly awarded me the diploma, shook my hand and a B/W picture was given to me latter of the graduation. Thanks to the DI's of Platoon 2094 13/Nov/1975 and SSgt Jackson of 1st Recon Bn 77-79

Comments: Hi Everyone
My name is Steve Ely. I'm an English writer researching into the life of former US Marine Clayton Fountain and am appealing for information about any aspect of Fountain's life in the Marine Corps from any former marines with any knowledge of him (many former Marines have already given me information, via this site, about the incident which led to Fountain's General Court-Martial; a very rough and incomplete summary of the incident is copied below. Thanks very much to everyone that helped).
Fountain served in the USMC 1972-1974 as part of a fleet marine force in the Pacific. He is notorious for shooting dead his Staff Sergeant, Douglas Wrin, at Grande Island, Subic Bay on 6th March, 1974. I believe he was serving on the USS Fresno at the time.
I'd appreciate any information from anyone who hasn't already contacted me, but would particularly like to speak to anyone directly involved in the hostage incident - particularly marines Caminiti, Oberg, Sacker, Mills & Robinson. If you've already been in touch and have got anything new, I'd be pleased to hear from you again.
However, I'm not merely looking for information about the murder and subsequent General Court-Martial. If you just knew Fountain as a fellow marine or even a pal and have any memories/knowledge of him at all, at work, r 'n' r, whatever, I'd be pleased to hear from you at steveely@btinternet.com.
Cheers
Steve Ely
Clayton Fountain – Grande Island Incident, 6th March, 1974
Sometime on or before March 6th, 1974, Private Clayton Anthony Fountain, 19, assigned to a Marine Amphibious Unit in the South Western Pacific, aboard the USS Fresno (although a source disputes that the Fresno was the ship, claiming that it was in dock in the US for repairs at the time of the incident), was disciplined by his Staff Sergeant Douglas Wrin [age unknown]. Fountain, from Savannah, Georgia, had worn PT kit in the Mess and for this offense, SSGT Wrin restricted him to ship. SSGT Wrin may have struck Fountain during this or another incident that took place close to that time. Fountain subsequently alleged this at his GMC. What is certain is that Fountain strongly resented SSGT Wrin, who he believed was victimising him and had threatened to kill him. The degree to whether this is the case or was a post-facto rationalisation is not clear.
Fountain was particularly angered and frustrated at being confined to ship on this occasion, not only because he was being denied the opportunity to have R ‘n’ R, but because he was planning to meet up with his Filipina wife [name unknown], who he had married in a local ceremony. Obviously, he had not seen her for some time and looked forward to seeing her. Indeed, on this occasion, he may have been planning to make arrangements to have the wedding put on a basis that would be legally recognised in the USA. The Fresno had only a limited [precise amount unknown] time in Subic, and his confinement to ship meant that Fountain would not be able to see his wife and make whatever arrangements he was planning to make.
Fountain, who had a history of violent behaviour prior to joining the USMC aged 17, and who would be characterised as a ‘sociopath’ at his General Court-Martial, somehow [details unknown] obtained a .45 calibre handgun from the armory (where he apparently worked), of the Fresno. He dismantled the gun and concealed it in his pockets, before somehow [details unknown] leaving the ship and making it to Grande Island. At Grande Island, he reassembled the .45 and used it to take a shotgun from a Filipina guard. He may have ‘knocked out’ this guard.
Fountain then sought out Wrin in the recreation area on Grande Island, where the ship’s company were engaged in a ‘company picnic’. Fountain found Wrin who was with his Filipina girlfriend, a Miss [first name unknown] Lopez. Fountain approached SSGT Wrin and, without speaking a word shot him (with the shotgun) from point blank range, mortally wounding him. Wrin may [uncorroborated] have taunted Fountain, daring him to shoot.
Miss Lopez testified at Fountain’s GCM that he walked away after the shooting in an abnormal, ‘stiff manner’, which might be indicative that Fountain’s rage or some other factor had made him ‘not himself’; Fountain’s defense at the GMC used this as evidence to support their contention that Fountain was not in control of his actions on March 6th and in fact had no memory of them. They contended that this was one of a pattern of acts of ‘amnesiac violence’ that Fountain had intermittently initiated since age 13.
This notwithstanding, Fountain then took four hostages, namely, L Cpl Oberg, L Cpl Robinson, L Cpl Mills and Pt Sacker, all from the Fresno [first names unknown]. Fountain may have taken other hostages, then or subsequently. The platoon commander of the named men, Fst Lt AJ Caminiti, had seen Fountain carrying the shotgun (immediately after the shooting) and saw him take the hostages. After calling for a MedEvac helicopter for SSGT Wrin, Caminiti cleared the recreation area.
Meanwhile, Fountain knocked over one or more benches to serve as impromptu barricades, and pointing his shotgun at the hostages, forced them to sit in a ‘tight group’. He then formed the hostages into ‘two lines’ and marched them to the centre of a baseball field, a distance of around 100 yards, where he instructed them to sit in a circle, covering them with the shotgun.
Having cleared the immediate area, Lt Caminiti approached Fountain and the hostages and called out to Fountain, trying to get him to stay calm and hand over the shotgun. Caminiti knew Fountain from the ship’s wardroom and used this relationship to gain Fountain’s initial confidence. Fountain agreed to speak to Caminiti. He refused to release any of the hostages, saying he needed them all. Caminiti developed Fountain’s confidence further in an attempt to ensure Fountain ‘stayed cool’.
Fountain spoke unguardly with Caminiti, relating how he had obtained the .45, the shotgun and how he had killed SSGT Wrin. This conversation was later to be a basis for Fountain’ s appeal against his conviction at his GCM; as Lt Caminiti did not advise Fountain of his rights vis-à-vis self incrimination, Fountain’s counsel contended that Caminiti’s evidence to the GCM was inadmissible and prejudicial. One of Fountain’s comments to Lt Caminiti and the other hostages was to the effect, ‘you should have seen the blood pop up when I shot him’.
As knowledge of the incident spread, Captain Ken Wilkinson received a call from the Provost Marshall, Col [first name unknown] Christian, informing him of the incident and asking for marksmen to go out to Grande Island. After checking recent rifle range scores, Wilkinson set out with SSGT Stacey [first name unknown], another marksman [name unknown] and a medical doctor [name unknown]. The plan Wilkinson developed whilst travelling over to Grande in the boat was to wound Fountain in the leg and after this ‘rush’ and overpower him.
At this stage, Fountain had managed to communicate his demands [via Lt. Caminiti? Via the Provost Marshall’s office?] and these demands were relayed to Rear Admiral Doniphan Shelton, Commander of US Naval Forces in the Philippines. Fountain’s demands were to be reunited with his wife and for them both to be flown to the southern Philippines without being tracked or followed. Fountain may also have asked for money and possibly a boat in which to be transported/make his escape. It is possible his demands developed and changed as the hostage situation developed.
RADM Shelton was in contact with the US Ambassador [name unknown] over the incident, which was potentially politically sensitive, given the Marcos Government’s ambivalent attitude to the US military presence at Subic Bay. RADM Shelton’s strategy was to ‘play along’ with Fountain’s demands in order to minimise the possibility of further bloodshed, but with the covert aim of apprehending and disarming Fountain as soon as it was safe so to do. However, some marines involved in this incident believed that RADM Shelton was in fact willing to concede Fountain’s demands. Their view is that the ultimate apprehension of Fountain was a locally determined act, not part of the Admiral’s strategy.
At some [as yet undetermined] stage, Fountain brought the hostages down to the pier on Grande Island, probably to await the launch that would bring his wife/take him to the plane that would fly him to the south Philippines. The Grande Island [Provost Marshall’s?] office was next to the pier. On the pier, an incident developed in which a hostage, possibly [but not certainly] a Hospital Corpsman Second Class (HM2) from the Fresno, who may have been Hispanic [name unknown] pushed Fountain off the pier, allowing the hostages to escape. However, the water just off the pier was shallow and Fountain was able to get back onto the pier and re-take HM2 as a hostage.
An alternative to this scenario is that Fountain fired randomly [with the shotgun or the .45?], possibly on seeing Capt Wilkinson’s boat approaching the pier. In the confusion, all the hostages, barring one, leapt into the sea and escaped. Alternatively, the confusion on the pier may have been sparked by Master SGT Garrison [first name unknown] of the Provost Marshall’s Office, who took a shot at Fountain, but whose gun misfired. Fountain then returned fire in his direction. SGT Garrison was unhurt. (Perhaps the incident on the pier is a combination of all the above; as yet the sequences are unclear.).
Fountain then [sequence is still not clear!] took his remaining (HM2?) hostage into the Grande Island office, which has also been described as a ‘Quonset Hut’. Here Fountain took a shot at Provost Marshall Col Christian, who was forced to escape out of the rear window of the office. In the office, Fountain was in communication with RADM Shelton by phone. The HM2 played an important role in keeping Fountain cool in the office and also spoke to the Admiral.
Meanwhile, Fountain’s company commander [name and rank unknown – Major or Lt Col Angelo Fernandez?] from the Fresno travelled [from the ship?] to Grande Island with his own sidearm with the intention of calling Fountain out onto the pier to shoot it out with him, western-style. Although he almost got his way, he was prevented from doing so [How? By whom?].
After Fountain holed up in the office, Cpt Wilkinson and Sgt Stacey took up position in a clump of trees that gave them cover and a vantage point for a shot at Fountain through the window of the office [this seems to be the case but is not 100% clear]. Cpt Wilkinson ordered SGT Stacey to shoot Fountain in the leg when the latter tired and dropped the shotgun from the hostage’s head. When Fountain dipped the weapon, Stacey fired. However, the bullet ricocheted from the [window? door?] jamb and grazed Fountain’s neck. Fountain was startled and dropped the weapon. Cpt Wilkinson and Sgt Garrison, who had returned from testing his rifle after the misfire, leapt on Fountain, overpowered him, searched and hand-cuffed him. Fountain was examined by the Doctor and taken by boat to Subic Bay, where he was processed by the Provost Marshall’s office at the Command Center and confined to brig.
On 19th July, 1974, Fountain was convicted of first degree murder at his GCM and sentenced to hard labour for life at the USDB at Fort Leavenworth.
Fountain was transferred into the federal prison system in 1977 after an escape bid from the USDB in which he took a guard hostage with a knife, gained access to the armory and tried to shoot his way out.
In the federal system he killed a further four times, three convicts and a Correctional Officer.
Fountain died in 2004, aged 49, in the Federal prison at Springfield, MO.

Comments: I have never played flag football with a finer group of marines than Separte Guard Class of 1969. Tho, we were cheated against in the final game for the Admiral's Cup, WE KNOW WHO WON. Without a doubt, the 18 months I spent in the P.I. were the most educating, funfilled, rank-dropping, you-name-it and we did it tour of my enlistment. The Supreme, Place to Play, the Harlem and Ole Toby(( how high is the water ya almost up to ole Toby's)) still flood my memory banks of good times .Here's a big shout out to the guards at Mainside gates who sometimes saluted me when I passed throug after curfew even tho my rank was lower that a snail. They are truly awesome people! I currently work for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a Security Specialist just north of Camp Pendleton. I plan to return to the OC/Base area someday to retire. What an awesome place to live!!!

Comments: I was discharged from USMC in 1977. Following year I joined Navy and became a Radioman. Retired from the Navy as RM2 after 20 years total military svc. Being a member of the Marine Barracks at Subic Bay was the best experience I ever had while in the military. I was especially proud that I was in Separate Guard Company (now that many years have gone by and I can reflect upon it much more favorably). Yes, there were days I hated the "Crotch", but overall it was a very good time for me. Now I look back and actually miss walking guard in the MAG at 0230 am. Or going out on Patrol in the middle of monsoon. San Miguel beer and lots of LBFMs. Who misses the Oak Barrell, or Wild West 1 and 2. Or the Playboy Club. Monkey on a stick! Yum! Yum! Oh yeah, Iv'e been to many other overseas stations (Scotland, Londonderry North Ireland and Sicily and Iceland) but Subic was THE BEST and no where else will ever top that. Sep Gd Co. 1975 - 1976
