MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Subic Bay Marines is to perpetuate memories of our duty in the Philippines and to foster camaraderie among Subic Bay Marines at an annual reunion. The Subic Bay Marines will serve as a role model for all Marines, past, present and future.

We will honor our commitment to this mission until there is no longer a Subic Bay Marine standing.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT
I would like to report that everything is fine in Connecticut and that is saying a lot compared to the rest of the Country. We have been reading about the wild fires, floods and tornados all over and I really feel very bad about it. Here we only had a noreaster and the damage was minimal. I am in the process of setting up our Memorial Day Parade. We have the Marine Corps Band from Albany, GA. and we are very excited. They will also be performing a Concert the night before, which is great. I don't know how many of you are involved in Community affairs, but I am constantly involved. We Veterans visit Schools, Hospitals and have Social Functions. As a matter of fact I was chosen Veteran of the year, by the Senior Citizens which is very exciting. We are closing in on Reunion time and Gloria and I are gearing up for our trip. We plan on driving down in our RV if possible. I have heard from a couple of Subic Bay Marines during the year and they seem interested in coming to the reunion. I will sign off now, looking forward to seeing all of you in WV. Stay in good health and have fun.

Pasquale (Pat) Battinelli - President

Rate good for 3 days before and 3 days after. We have a block of rooms set aside so make your reservations before June 10, 2007 at 1-800-624-6988 and be sure to mention “Subic Bay Marines Reunion”. There is also a fitness center, in and out door pool, sauna, free parking, driving range, Arnold Palmer Golf Course, tennis courts, horse stables, pedal boating, fishing, miles of paved walking/jogging trails, magnificent gardens and much more. Be sure to check out the web site at http://www.oglebay-resort.com. There will also be a Sternwheeler Regatta in Wheeling while our reunion is going on. Might be interesting.

Oglebay Resort. Over a hundred years ago, a tradition of generous hospitality was started at the summer estate of Earl W. Oglebay in Wheeling, West Virginia. Today, Oglebay Resort and Conference Center offers 1700 acres of year-round recreational opportunities and excellent overnight accommodations but has retained its picturesque natural beauty.

We will have a well-stocked Hospitality suite for our use throughout the reunion, a Meet and Greet Thursday night, a trip Friday with lunch, Continental breakfast Saturday morning followed by business meeting Saturday morning and the banquet Saturday night. See below for an important event at the banquet. If you have anything appropriate to donate to the raffle and drawings, be sure to bring it.

Jim Thomas, 63-65, SepGdCo, a building contractor in Wheeling is the organizer of this reunion. Wheeling is on I-70 at the Ohio River. There are at least 15 major metropolitan areas in the east that are within 400 miles of Wheeling. For those that will fly in, the Pittsburgh International Airport is approximately 50 miles NE of Wheeling. The Oglebay Resort and Conference Center is located on Rt. 88 N, just 4 miles off I-70 at exit 2A. Also marked Oglebay exit.

Memories are great! Especially our time at Subic Bay. Check our Mission Statement above. Perpetuate memories of our duty in the Philippines - Foster camaraderie among Subic Bay Marines - At an annual reunion. This is the time for our Annual Reunion. So far the Treasurer has only received reservations from 14 Subic Bay Marines and even less for the Hotel. Be a part of this annual event. Don’t be a procrastinator. Help the reunion planners. Make your reservations today with both the Treasurer and the Hotel.

THE MARINE BARRACKS FLAG

You are cordially invited to be present at a historical event in the life of the Marine Barracks, Subic Bay and there is a lot of history for which the Barracks has received honors, from 1899 to 1941 and from 1946 to deactivation in November 1992.  As many of you may recall, Colonel Rufus Bowers, Commanding Officer from 19 June 1982 to 29 August 1984, presented us with a Marine Barracks organizational flag at the 2000 reunion in San Diego. Colonel Bowers has since done some historical research and advised us at the 2006 reunion in San Diego that our organizational flag is authorized to display 13 streamers, signifying noteworthy times and events in the life of the Marine Barracks. Keeping the memories alive. Bring your cameras.

What is the organizational flag, you may ask? When they are not leading parades, there are normally two flags that are located directly behind the desk of the unit commander. The American flag is of silken material with the stars and stripes and gold fringe. The organizational flag is made of red silken material and has embroidery galore, to include the Marine Corps emblem, name of the organization, appropriate gold fringe, etc. The organizational flag is quite an elaborate, and expensive piece of work.

The Marine Barracks, Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines has been honored by the award of the following:

Presidential Unit Citation (Army)

   World War II, Philippines 1941
Meritorious Unit Commendation with four Bronze Stars
             Navy Unit Commendation
                Marine Corps Expeditionary
                   Philippine Campaign
                      World War I Victory
Asiatic-Pacific Campaign with one Bronze Star
American Defense Service with one Bronze Star
                               World War II Victory
National Defense Service with two Bronze Stars
Philippine Defense with one Bronze Star
Philippine Presidential Unit Citation with one Bronze Star

It is expected that Colonel Bowers will lead the appropriate dedication ceremony at the 2007 reunion in Wheeling, WV when the streamers are officially attached to the Marine Barracks Subic Bay organizational flag. If any Subic Bay Marines were present when awards were presented, you are invited to assist in the attachment of the appropriate streamer. Please notify the Secretary. Since the organizational flag became history in November 1992, nearly 15 years ago, The Subic Bay Marines may be the only group that has its flag and a reason to fly it. Please note the reunion dates on your calendars, send in your reservations early, and be a part of this historic moment. Opportunity never comes – It’s here!!!!

In order to defray the costs involved, please note an additional line on the Dues Statement and Reunion Reservation Form, “Voluntary Contribution toward purchase of Flag Streamers .” If voluntary contributions exceed costs, the excess will be segregated for future uses to support other appropriate historical events that may come to our attention.

THE LADIES CORNER
The Ladies will have their usual get together during the annual business meeting. Be There.

SECRETARY NOTES
Note from Chuck Vitek, our “Finder” of Missing Subic Bay Marines. He is working with a new search engine. Please search your PCS orders or address books from their PI Tours and if you are in touch with any old buddies not on the Web Site roster, please let Chuck know at chuckvitek@cox.net.

Dues.
Our dues year runs from January 1 to December 31. Dues pay primarily for the web site, the periodic Newsletters and the recruiting effort. If you are philosophically opposed to paying dues and would wish to make a voluntary contribution to defray expenses, the Subic Bay Marines will appreciate it. Please send checks or money orders to: Subic Bay Marines, c/o Tony Amundsen, 4353 Scenic Dr, Pittsburg, CA 94565.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE PAID DUES OR MADE A VOLUNTARY CONTRIBITION DURING 2005!!!

A special thanks for those that contrtibuted to the Flag Streamers Fund!

Job Opening. The Secretary has advised the Board of Directors of the Subic Bay Marines that, after 11 years on the job, he will not be available for appointment to another term as Secretary, and would like to be relieved as of the end of the Wheeling Reunion.
The primary duties are maintenance of the roster (152 names in 1996 – over 3,600 now) and does 3 Newsletters per year (this part could probably be parceled out – find an editor).

Why would anyone volunteer for this job? First, the job provides a bit of a challenge and also provides an awful lot of satisfaction. Second, it can be a lot of fun. Third, you meet an awful lot of really fine guys be either e-mail or snail mail. Fourth, the Secretary gets a lot of questions.

If any Subic Bay Marine would be interested in becoming the Secretary, please contact the Secretary at jimsbm@cox.net for info on what the duties are.

Note from Chuck Vitek,
our “Finder” of Missing Subic Bay Marines. The majority of our roster is the result of the efforts of Chuck. He is working with a new search engine. Please search your PCS orders or address books from their PI Tours and if you are in touch with any old buddies not on the Web Site roster, please let Chuck know at chuckvitek@cox.net.

E-Mail
The e-mail address for the Secretary or for regular Subic Bay Marines business is jimsbm@cox.net. Please make a note of it. Always glad to hear from Subic Bay Marines.

The Subic Bay Marines Web Site
can be found at http://www.subicbaymarines.com. Check it out. Read the Bulletin Board and Newsletters. Sign the Guest Book. Find friends in the Guest Book and read the comments on one of the finest duty stations available to Marines.

The roster of Subic Bay Marines
on the web site will be updated in June, 2007. There are literally hundreds of changes, additions, etc., each month. Rather than try to keep the official roster and also the web site roster, it was decided that periodically, an entire newly updated roster would replace the present one. If you find something wrong on the line with your name, please notify the Secretary for inclusion in the next update. .

Interesting Recent Guest Book Entry. “Hope I'm not intruding here on hallowed ground. I'm actually a Brit (grew up in a military family in UK, Germany and Cyprus) recently moved to Manila from NYC and I was in Subic last weekend. The place has been relaunched as a tourist and free-trade zone, but I was really struck by the residual soul of the place underlying all that. Despite the US mil not being there now there is still an energy or a sense of the presence of all the guys who served there. Among the many tangible signs like old barrack buildings and sports fields etc, I couldn't help imagine all the adventures, great times and camaraderie that existed there. Really enjoyed looking at the pics on this site and stepping back in time. You guys shared something pretty special.”

Here is something you will probably want. Speaking ofYou guys shared something pretty special”, Bob White, 76-77, has acquired some 1˝” brass commemorative coins that he will be glad to furnish to you. One side has a Marine Corps Emblem with “Subic Bay Marines” and “Brothers Forever” around the emblem and “A” Co/Hq, Mainside, “B” Co/Separate Guard Co, Cubi Point, and “C” Co/Detached Guard Co, San Miguel on the very outside. Colors are mainly red, blue and gold. The reverse of the coin has the American and Philippine Flags and a colorful jeepney with Marine Barracks, Subic Bay Philippines and 1899 – 1992 around the outside. Pretty neat!! Total cost is $6.00 plus postage. Any profit will go to the Subic Bay General Fund. To order coin or coins, call Bob at 815-544-3932 or e-mail; him at bobwhiteludy@aol.com. If you wish to reserve your coins, Bob will bring them to the reunion in Wheeling, September 12-15, 2007.
